Thomas A. Williams, PhD: Success with English: Learning through doing!
Thomas A. Williams teaches at the Department of English Language Teacher Education and Applied Linguistics, University of Szeged. With a PhD in English Applied Linguistics, he is always on the lookout for great ideas in foreign language learning and teaching. And with an MA in Teaching English as a Foreign Language and over 28 years of experience in the classroom, he is also very interested to see whether those great ideas actually work.
A growing body of research has shown that we learn English and other foreign languages most effectively by using them. Unfortunately, all too many foreign language learners experience anxiety when they are expected to speak – though speaking is a very important part of language use and therefore language learning. This workshop aims to encourage learners to use their English (especially in speaking) in real-world situations. This is done through a range of purposeful (and, hopefully, fun) speaking tasks done in pairs and small groups with feedback from the teacher. It is hoped that this will help learners to better understand the importance of learning language through doing.
